<image:caption>Lighting will play a key part in how we feel. Our bodies are in tune with the sun and its natural cycles. Just ask anyone who suffers with SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) caused by changes in lighting conditions in the winter months. Natural light is important, and we should position our furniture and arrange our activities to make the most of it. Ordinary bulbs produce light which is towards the red end of the spectrum, with little blue or green light. Fluorescent light is the opposite. It emits higher electromagnetic fields, and its flicker can cause headaches</image:caption>

<image:caption>Smell We all know that smells can influence the way we feel about a place. Who hasn’t popped on a pot of coffee or wafted some fresh baked bread around when trying to sell a house? At Praxis’ offices, we always have scented oils and air fresheners in the office (even when none of us have had something spicy the night before. That’s how feng shui we are)!</image:caption>

<image:title>The Praxis Press - How Feng Shui Is Your Office? - Here are few tips to keep the energy flowing in your office.</image:title>
<image:caption>According to office feng shui guidelines, your desk should be placed at a diagonal to the doorway, or directly facing it, rather than with your back to it. If there's more than one desk, place two on a diagonal facing towards the door and any others on a diagonal facing into the centre of the room. They should not be placed in rows in a traditional classroom layout, or back to back. If the doorways of offices that face each other across a hallway are not exactly aligned, place a mirror in front of each door. If you face a partial wall or partition, when entering an office, place a mirror on the partition. Soften jutting walls with plants. Break up dull walls with mirrors or paintings. The feng shui elements that are easiest to blend into an office decor are pictures and photographs. Look out for pictures that represent the various aspects and display them in the appropriate areas.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6874f33e8394230d380f5906/03e6fd4e-dc94-4844-9c51-b9ed922c37cd/Fung+Shui+Coin.jpeg</image:loc>
<image:title>The Praxis Press - How Feng Shui Is Your Office? - Whilst it is understandable that many of us might be a little sceptical that tying three coins together with red ribbon (let’s face it, not that easy with UK currency, anyway) and placing them in the back of our accounts book, will bring you good luck, there are a lot of basic, common sense principles that many of us simply ignore in both our domestic and working environments.</image:title>
<image:caption>The overriding purpose of feng shui is to create an environment where, through a variety of components, we are able to maximise our physical and mental wellbeing. Let's face it, we could all do with a bit of that. We’ve all walked into a room and felt uncomfortable, and, likewise, there are places we go where we feel totally relaxed and ‘at home’. Feng shui is the 'science' that explains why this happens. Basically, it’s all about balance. Most of us have heard of the yin and the yang, the concept of positive and negative energies, conflicting with each other to obtain dominance. Sounds like we’re heading back to mumbo jumbo land, BUT we can apply this to any real world situation.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Praxis Press - How Feng Shui Is Your Office? - Clutter</image:title>
<image:caption>Clutter is a state of mind, not just the state of our physical environment. It can be all the things we haven’t done, like unreturned phone calls and appointments not made. It’s everything we do not use or wear, inherited objects and things given to us as presents that we don’t like, but feel guilty about parting with. We may stay in a job, thinking we are indispensable, or due to a misguided sense of loyalty, but, often it is because we are afraid to take a leap and change direction.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Praxis Press - How Feng Shui Is Your Office? - Plants</image:title>
<image:caption>Plants will have a variety of uses in an office environment. As well as their obvious aesthetic charm, they have a number of uses, including hiding a jutting corner, draining excess water energy from a room, breaking up long corridors and bringing life into an office environment. Some will even clean the air for you. We should remember though that cut flowers may look beautiful in a vase, but, like dried flowers, they are, technically, dead. Potted plants are much better as they bring life to the environment. Furniture The positioning of our desks and other furniture can also play a vital part in the feel and energy of a room. (See Below).</image:caption>

<image:title>The Praxis Press - What Expenses Can We Claim When Working From Home? - Where using simplified expenses, we would calculate the total running costs of the premises, and then deduct a flat rate to cover our personal use of those premises. The rates are based on the number of people, and are applied as follows:</image:title>
<image:caption>If we live alone in the premises, the private use deduction is £350 a month. When there are two of us, this is increased to £500 a month. If there are three or more of us, the monthly rate tops out at £650 per month. Again, the flat rates are applied on a pro rata basis, depending on the amount of time spent living in the premises. The obvious example would be that of a child, who lives away at university 9 months of the year, but lives at home for 3 months.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Praxis Press - What Expenses Can We Claim When Working From Home? - You can apply simplified expenses to cars, goods vehicles and motorcycles, unless they are designed for commercial use (such as black cabs and dual control driving instructors’ cars).</image:title>
<image:caption>If you do chose to use simplified expenses, then you cannot use these if you are claiming any other vehicle running costs, or capital allowances. For vehicle expenses, we work on a flat rate per mile, depending on our total mileages, as follows: For cars and goods vehicles, we can claim 45p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles a year. After 10,000 miles, the rate is claimed at 25p a mile. For motorcycles, the flat rate is 24p a mile, regardless of overall mileage.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Praxis Press - What Expenses Can We Claim When Working From Home? - For many, however, especially if we are primarily working from home, as opposed to running a full on business from home, it may be preferable to claim the flat rate WFH (Working From Home) Allowance. This is, of course, far simpler than having to calculate specific business elements of household expenses. Worth noting that the flat rate allowance only covers household running costs, and does not include telephone or internet costs. You can still claim the business element of these, on top of the WFH Allowance.</image:title>
<image:caption>In order to use the simplified expenses basis, you will need to work at least 25 hours a month from home. If you do, then you can claim the following: Between 25 and 50 hours a month, we can claim a flat rate allowance of £10 per month. Between 51 and 100 hours a month, this is increased to £18 per month If we work 101 hours a month, or more, we can claim £26 a month in flat rate allowances.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Praxis Press - What Expenses Can We Claim When Working From Home? - In our earlier posts, we took a look at some of the things we need to consider, when thinking of starting a business from home, followed by a quick look at when we need to tell the Tax Man we are doing so.</image:title>
<image:caption>In this post, we will take a look at what expenses we can actually claim, when we chose to do so. HMRC offers us two main options for claiming expenses; Claiming a proportion of the actual running costs of the house, insofar as they relate to the business element of the property, or; Claiming a flat monthly rate, based on the number of hours a month we spend working from home. If we believe that our legitimate business expenses are more than the flat rate allowances, then we can claim a proportion of our actual household running costs against the business.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Praxis Press - When Do we Need To Tell The Tax Man About Our business? - Often this will either be in the same line of work as our main employment, or it could be the development of a personal hobby or interest.</image:title>
<image:caption>If it’s just a little income on the side, when do we have to register as a ‘proper’ business, with the Inland Revenue etc? Currently, there is no requirement to register as self employed, provided our total gross income for the tax year doesn’t exceed £1,000. This allows those of us with a small ‘side hustle’ to continue to earn very small sums of money, without the requirement to notify HMRC. A few years ago, we were able to notify the Inland Revenue at the end of the first year’s trading, on submission of the first year’s accounts and tax returns. This is no longer the case, and once our income hits £1,000 for the first time, we must ensure we are registered as self employed by the 5th October, following the end of that tax year. So, if our total income for the year surpasses £1,000 in November 2025, we would be required to register by 5 October 2026. There are two main ways to register. You can do so via the HMRC Government Gateway, or by calling them direct, on 0300 200 300.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Praxis Press - Employing Family Members In The Business. Yes Or No? - Under current legislation, the National Minimum Wage doesn’t need to be paid to workers in the family business, provided they are members of the employer’s family, and share the family home.</image:title>
<image:caption>That said, the more we can pay them, within reason the greater the expense, for tax purposes. Also worth bearing in mind that, if the business is operated as a limited company, HMRC take the view that the company, as the employer, is a separate legal entity, and cannot be considered to have a family, or its own family home, so National Minimum Wage rates will, therefore, still apply. As with most things, common sense is the watch word here. We need to be able to argue that our kids are performing tasks that are well within their capabilities. Many, these days, are highly computer literate, and may have done work for us on our web sites, spread sheets etc. Others may have helped us with despatching goods, filling mail shot envelopes etc.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Quarterly Returns, under MTDITSA will only include income and expenditure from Self Employment and Rental Income, so we will, of course, still need to submit details of other income, such as bank interest, pensions and dividends. This will be done, annually, as part of the new year end Tax Return, which you will complete once all quarterly Returns have been submitted and finalised.</image:caption>

Entertainers or sports people who are non UK resident, and have no other UK income. Taxpayers with no UK National Insurance number. Trustees of charitable trusts. Taxpayers claiming qualifying care relief for that source of income only (for example, foster carers). Those claiming Married Couples Allowance / Blind Persons Allowance. <image:title>The Praxis Press - Making Tax Digital For Income Tax & Self Assessment (MTDITSA) Are You Ready? - What Is MTDITSA?</image:title>
<image:caption>MTDITSA is due to replace the existing Self Assessment taxation system. In order to comply with the new system, if applicable, you will need to do the following: Create digital records for all your transactions Use specific, HMRC accredited software to submit details of your business income and expenditure on a quarterly basis. Submit a Final Declaration, annually. This will effectively replace the existing Self Assessment Tax Return.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Praxis Press - Making Tax Digital For Income Tax & Self Assessment (MTDITSA) Are You Ready? - Making Tax Digital as a concept, has been with us since April 2019, and introduced far stricter reporting requirements for VAT registered businesses, requiring them to submit their VAT Returns using only accredited software, as opposed to simply completing a VAT Return manually, or via the HMRC Government Gateway.</image:title>
<image:caption>Making Tax Digital For Income Tax & Self Assessment extends this way beyond the requirements of the original directives.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Praxis Press - Starting A Business From Home - Many of the implications we will be considering in this article are going to be influenced by whether we are simply working from home, or whether we are actually running a full on business.</image:title>
<image:caption>Working from home, even on a self employed basis is unlikely to require any permissions whatsoever, as in doing so we are exerting no external influences on our environment, or our neighbours. Running a business from home on the other hand is far more likely to influence those around us, and is more likely to require permissions. For the purposes of this section, we will assume you are running a business from home. The first permission we may need to seek is that of our mortgage provider or landlord. increased footfall to the property may have a detrimental effect on that property, and the operation of machinery for example, could potentially represent an increased fire hazard.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Praxis Press - Starting A Business From Home - It's more than likely that your home insurance policy will not cover your business (in terms of stock, computers, public liability etc.).</image:title>
<image:caption>You can find an authorised insurer on the British Insurance Brokers' Association website. You can include your business costs in your Self Assessment Tax Return if you're a sole trader or part of a business partnership. You can claim a proportion of the cost of things like council tax, heating, lighting, phone calls and broadband. From the 2014 tax year, if you prefer, you can use a flat rate to calculate your simplified allowable expenses.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Praxis Press - Starting A Business From Home - We will be looking at this topic in terms of five key areas:</image:title>
<image:caption>The first aspect will be what permissions we are going to need, in order to run our business from home. Secondly, we will be looking at the implications, if any, in terms of the payment of business rates. The third aspect is that of business insurance, and what we are likely to need, over and above our normal household policy. The next major consideration is what the potential tax implications will be, of working from home. Finally, we will look at any other potential implications of starting your new business venture from your home address.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Praxis Press - Starting A Business From Home - Starting your own business is no mean feat. There are so many things to consider. Just because we're a small business, doesn't mean we can ignore important health and safety legislation.</image:title>
<image:caption>As soon as we take on just one employee, we need to take in to account such aspects as payroll and pensions legislation, not to mention the likes of Employee Liability Insurance. If you require any further information, we strongly recommend you check out the HMRC publication entitled The Home Business Guide. Written by Emma Jones, of Enterprise Nation, it covers many of the key elements of working from home for the first time. Emma has in the past worked very closely with Praxis Managing Director Alan Young, and has even kindly provided us with a testimonial, on the Praxis web site.</image:caption>
